Fort Augustus Abbey at The Highland Club, Scotland

The Highland Club at Fort Augustus is set within the historic Grade A-listed Benedictine abbey, originally a Catholic monastery.

Guarding the Great Glen on the shores of Loch Ness, Fort Augustus Abbey has a long and often turbulent history that stretches back to the days of Culloden and Bonnie Prince Charlie. In 1876 the Lovat Estate leased the ground to a Benedictine Order of Monks who built a monastery, and later a school.

The original wooden boathouse in The Abbey has been converted into the waterside Boathouse Restaurant offering magnificent views of Loch Ness. Other restaurants are just within a 2 minute walk in the village of Fort Augustus.

The Boathouse Restaurant is privately owned we have no control over the opening hours and note that the restaurant is closed during winter.

Sunset over Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness, Scotland

The Highland Club sits on the southern shore of Loch Ness, a freshwater loch extending to 37 kilometres. Loch Ness stretches from Fort Augustus (in the south) to Inverness in the north.

Famous for its sightings of Nessie, it’s the largest loch, by volume, in the British Isles and extremely deep (at least 230 metres in places).

Enjoy walking the Great Glen Way from The Highland Club northwards, following the forests above Loch Ness, with stunning views and beautiful countryside (there are two different routes north you can follow – the high and low routes). You can also take the lower level route along the Great Glen Way towards the south from The Highland Club, following Loch Oich and Loch Lochy towards Fort William.

Another enjoyable walk along the shores of Loch Ness is the South Loch Ness Trail. This trail runs for 59km from Fort Augustus to Inverness via Loch Tarff, the village of Foyers, the hamlet of Inverfargaig, and provides superb panoramic views over Loch Ness at the Fair Haired Lad’s Pass.

Visit Urquhart Castle, a half hour drive north from The Highland Club. This ruined castle is one of the largest in Scotland and learn about it’s 500 year dramatic history. Or simply relax by the shores of Loch Ness and soak up the amazing scenery. Tea, coffee, lunches and evening meals can be enjoyed at The Boathouse Restaurant.
