In 1876 the Lovat Estate leased the ground to a Benedictine Order of Monks who built a Monastery and later a school.

Minutes from the Aonach Mor Apartment, the pretty village of Fort Augustus lies on the banks of the Caledonian Canal, with a succession of locks and a wonderful swing bridge that takes boats onto Loch Ness.
