The holiday apartments put you in the heart of the Scottish Highlands.
Once you have settled in you will be free to explore the many delights that the Highlands of Scotland have to offer.
Below you will find a small selection of attractions and activities you can enjoy.
Urquhart Castle
The great Square Tower of the castle, on its spur of rock, lapped by the waters of Loch Ness, dominates the landscape, as it must have dominated the lives of many people over the centuries. Archaeological excavations have shown that there was a fort here in prehistoric times. With an enormous visitor centre, you will be able to see a video giving an account of the history of the castle, and see various artifacts discovered at the site.
Loch Ness
Twenty-four miles long and a mile wide in places, it reaches a depth of some 700 feet.
There is much more to Loch Ness than the monster, though the monster makes its presence felt. It is neither certainly there nor certainly not there, a feeling that anyone can empathise with who has spent even half an hour looking at that immense and ever changing surface of the water. The Loch Ness 2000 Visitor Centre is a four star visitor attraction and highly recommended.
Touring
Central for touring the beautiful Highlands, visiting the Isle of Skye or distilleries on the Whisky Trail.
Walking & Cycling
The Great Glen Way which runs through Fort Augustus, is a footpath
of 70 miles across Scotland between Inverness in the east and
Fort William in the west. Alternatively, you could walk along
the old military road in Fort Augustus taking in some stunning
views of the village and Loch Ness or take one of the trails around
nearby Alt na Criche. There are many beautiful woodland walks
and cycle routes in and around Fort Augustus for you to enjoy.
Climbing
For the ‘munro-baggers’ amongst you, there are more than 30 Munros
within an hours drive.
Golf
Visit the championship course at Nairn, visit the Fairways golf
course, Loch Ness or walk to the local golf club in Fort Augustus.
Skiing
Just a 30 minute drive away, the Aonach Mor Ski area has a chairlift going up 1200m, giving you incredible views, with skiing available for all abilities during the winter months. Parascending and mountain biking are also available here in the summer. Just over an hour away, ski-ing is also available at the Cairngorm and Lecht ski resorts.
On the Water
Fishing is available in the Loch and surrounding rivers, alternatively
there are many boating operators on the Caledonian Canal offering
yachts and motor cruisers for hire. Or you could catch a boat
at Fort Augustus to Inverness for a days shopping.
Catch a boat from just oustide the Abbey
grounds. See www.cruiselochness.com
for details. Concessions are available for Aonach Mor guests.
